Rules for writing a resume

Curriculum Vitae is not a template document, but rather a self-advertisement of the writer. The purpose of the resume is to interest the employer in our person and provide him with all the necessary information needed in the hiring process. This is so important that there are often many candidates vying for the same position. That’s why your application document should stand out and put our good skills and qualifications first.

Unfortunately, we can’t be 100% sure that our resume is flawless and spotless. However, if we adhere to certain rules, we can be satisfied that we did the best we could.

Curriculum Vitae in Latin means course or course of life. In other words, it is a document that covers your curriculum vitae and professional experience.

A resume is a document with a certain hierarchy, so you must remember to follow certain rules.

Contact information

You need to list them at the top of your resume. Put them in the following order:

  • First and last name;
  • Date of birth;
  • Place of residence;
  • Cell phone number where you are available;
  • Email address – should be personal, under no circumstances should you use funny personal nicknames or weird endings.

Photo – preferably in the upper right corner in ID photo format, it can’t be a photo from a party, holiday or elementary school,

If required by the employer, it is also worth adding a reference or position for which you are applying.


Another important piece of information that should be on your resume concerns your education. The chronology is reversed. You include the following information:

  • The name of the university, the date you started and graduated, and the name of your major. Also find out when should you list your gpa on a resume.
  • Specialization, major subjects, you can also write the date of your dissertation and its title. If the thesis author is a well-known expert, you can also mention him or her if you want to emphasize your academic credibility.

You should not write about elementary and junior high schools in our professional resume.

Professional Experience

As with education, you also write about professional experience in reverse chronological order. You include information such as:

  • Date of beginning and completion of work,
  • Company name and address,
  • The scope of duties we perform.

People with modest experience can post information about internships, training courses, etc. You can also list activities that have provided new experiences or skills. You should not list all the work, but only the work that will help you in your new job. Let’s not write about a job delivering newspapers or picking asparagus. Such information may even hurt us.
